Nicole’s Connection to Nature: Biodiversity and Plant Remedies

Her is Nicole from Basel, Switzerland. She has lived in the city for most of her life, but from a young age, she experienced and learned from nature thanks to her parents.

Nicole has a Schrebergarten in Basel, an allotment where she grows her own vegetables, plants, and flowers, all in total respect of nature. Having a Schrebergarten is also about being part of a community, creating a magical space where people share with nature and each other. Nicole will tell you more about this special experience in the interview below.

Nicole, what is for you sustainability and Nature?

Nature is very important to me; I am a nature person.

I need to be able to go outside, to feel the ground, the soil, and the plants, and to experience the weather—I can’t live without it.

Sustainability, for me, goes hand in hand with loving and living in harmony with nature. It’s fundamental; in the world we live in,  we must care for it.

This means that even with a small balcony or garden, we can do something for the world we live in,  so we need to give something back.

We take something from the world we live in,  so we need to give something back.  We can’t just abuse it;  it has to be a cycle.

What does your garden mean to you?

It’s an escape from the everyday world, a way to stay in touch with nature, and a means to stay healthy.

It makes me happy to observe the cycle of nature, and the vegetables taste better.

Taking care of a plant is a fulfillment of the soul.

What does the Schrebergarten community mean to you?

I believe there is a unique energy here; it’s a different kind of Schrebergarten.

The people here are very nice, and we help each other.

I’ve known Nicole for a little while now; she is my new neighbor in the Schrebergarten.
Nicole understands plants deeply—feeling, tasting, and listening to them. She knows their remedies and works with them with profound respect. Barefoot in her garden, she connects with the earth, experimenting like a true sorceress of her domain. Her reverence for nature transcends into something almost spiritual.

Kraut und Rüben: A Community Garden’s Story

Kraut und Rüben is a community of nature lovers who, despite diverse backgrounds, come together to create and nurture a beautiful garden. I believe that when you truly love what you do, your soul shines. These people radiate a unique energy and share values that make this place not just a garden, but the beginning of something vibrant and flourishing.

I have fallen in love with these two—mother and son—as I watch the child help his mother and everyone else in the garden. It’s beautiful to see how gardening becomes a game for him, not just a way to connect with nature. It’s as if he has two mothers: his biological mother and Mother Nature, both guiding him and teaching him life’s lessons through the wonders of the natural world

Like two friends caring for other friends—in this case, nature, more specifically beans and Brussels sprouts—I could see a unique kind of communication unfolding. They listen to the plants, talk to each other, taste them, touch them, and study them closely. It becomes a matter of truly feeling nature, of communicating with it. And the best part? It’s done together, turning it into a shared learning process that’s both fun and meaningful.

A true lover of the ecosystem, Steffen created a special area in the garden for bees and other beneficial insects. He planted flowers and herbs and set up a dedicated space just for the bees, which he carefully keeps clean for them. As he shared this beautiful project with me, the curiosity of the garden’s youngest member was incredible—he climbed onto Steffen’s shoulder, eagerly listening to the story about the bees and the ecosystem they’re helping to create.

It was wonderful to meet them, and I wish them continued success with this incredible project. For more information about them, visit Kraut und Rüben. A special thanks to Stadtgärtnerei for making all these nature projects possible!

The Art of Care: Marcello’s Bonsai Connection

Marcello, a love story with his bonsai. In harmony and peace, Marcello cares for his bonsai in a very intimate way.

Marcello is 25 years old and has developed a passion for the world of bonsai botany.

He has created a small bonsai oasis on his sun-kissed terrace.

Marcello knows his bonsai well and understands how to take care of them. It’s not a simple task: it requires delicacy, care, attention, and feels like a spiritual ritual, performed in silence and contemplation with his plants.

Pruning, wiring, soil, fertilizers… everything contributes to creating bonsai that showcase their beauty in miniature. Small trees that embody an unseen harmony and spirituality.

Nature teaches us that whatever kind of dedication we offer, it always gives us something in return, something that few other things can. Growth, change, patience, harmony, care, love, spirituality, calmness, listening: these are all aspects I found in Marcello’s story with his bonsai.
